Challenge

Reducing greenhouse gas emissions

Shelf Drilling is focused on reducing its greenhouse gas emissions in line with the Paris Agreement. The organization’s target is to achieve a 20% average daily, per rig Scope 1 emissions reduction by 2026. In 2022, Shelf Drilling successfully attained a 5.5% reduction.

More than 95% of Shelf Drilling’s Scope 1 emissions are attributed to fuel burnt by the engines powering the rig. Each rig utilizes between three and six engines with the number online determined by the type of rig’s activity. While Shelf Drilling’s ability to significantly reduce fuel consumption is constrained by the customer well program, the adoption of Jedox in 2022 has played a pivotal role in supporting its reduction efforts. Jedox, an innovative online tool for tracking engine emissions, provides near real-time monitoring and synchronization of key engine readings and fuel consumption data across Shelf Drilling’s fleet of rigs. This cloud-based system acts as a central repository, allowing Shelf Drilling to easily track and monitor its greenhouse gas emissions. Jedox’s adaptability and user-friendly visualizations have made it easier to share operational information across Shelf Drilling’s teams, promoting alignment around their sustainability goals.

Before Jedox, this data was manually captured using Excel, which took a substantial amount of time to consolidate each month. In addition, manual data capture in Excel was prone to errors, as there was no system validation in place. The organization also wanted near real-time insights for efficiently tracking and managing fuel consumption and assisting the rig teams in achieving their sustainability goals. Fuel consumption is different for every rig in the fleet, which made a consistent data tracking method even more necessary.

Solution

Ease of use accelerates adoption and progress toward emission goals

Shelf Drilling had already adopted JD Edwards ERP and various business intelligence (BI) tools, so it could seamlessly integrate the Jedox enterprise performance management solution with its existing technology infrastructure to maintain a consistent, up-to-date, single source of fuel consumption data.

The Jedox platform’s familiar Excel-like user interface facilitated a swift adoption process for end users, enabling Shelf Drilling to swiftly report on and aggregate information on its sustainability performance.

Because of how Jedox is implemented, it’s now easier for all rigs to contribute to planning models through an offline, batched operation. The adaptability that Jedox offers in this regard is of great importance for its usability on the offshore drilling rigs. The application is highly customizable and offers visualization options to create pie charts, bar charts, and more.

While our data capture processes are more streamlined with Jedox, many of our colleagues still freely use MS Excel and pivot tables to analyze data from the platform. They appreciate that they can simply export all the information from Jedox back into Excel for their ad-hoc data analysis. In the webforms, we can quickly add dropdowns for selection and easily create the required filters to help users get to the information that they need swiftly.

Outcome

An efficient system to meet sustainability goals

Today, the planning process at Shelf Drilling looks a lot different than the previous process. Rig supervisors and other personnel make data entries in Jedox web forms, eliminating the disconnected Excel spreadsheets and ensuring seamless synchronization with the Jedox cloud platform. HQ and other locations get near real-time visibility of key metrics.

Equipped with accurate and timely fuel consumption data from the rigs, Shelf Drilling can optimize engine hours, reduce fuel consumption, and advance its sustainability objectives.
