Enhance access to justice. Improve the legal system. Empower lawyers to achieve. These three pillars have remained the foundation of the D.C. Bar’s mission since its creation by the District of Columbia Court of Appeals in 1972. Today, the Bar stands as the second-largest unified bar in the United States, providing the oversight structure needed to maintain the profession’s ethical standards and Rules of Professional Conduct. Its membership is diverse, with over 100,000 members in all 50 states and more than 80 countries.

Challenge

Flexible reporting and planning

The D.C. Bar generates revenue from its member dues and various events, training, and education programs. The Bar’s finance team ran into the issue of having reporting software that wasn’t flexible enough or easy to use. Specifically, accessing data at the right level of detail from the accounting system, and consolidating data into various groupings, was not possible with the current reporting software, which made it difficult to provide the robust reporting needed to analyze the Bar’s performance. As the organization continued to grow and use four-dimensional cost-tracking reporting, its software wasn’t making the cut. That’s when the D.C. Bar reached out to Jedox to find a better solution and solve its reporting challenges. The ideal solution was software that could replicate all the structures within the organization and allow users to drill down to the right level of detail and through to the source system to see the transaction-level data. The reporting software also needed to access data from both the GL and association management software. The D.C. Bar chose Jedox because it was flexible and easy to implement and use.

Solution

Seeing the results

After some basic in-house training, the D.C. Bar finance team was able to implement a reporting and budgeting system in three to six months that is used by 45 users. These users are now able to budget and report over the web easily and efficiently. They are also able to analyze details of revenue and expenses as well as carry out ad hoc analysis and trend analysis. They can get the right financial information quickly, already sliced and diced according to defined business models.
