Using FP&A to drive business agility in uncertain times

According to the National Environment Agency, a 2-hour weather forecast can accurately predict the weather about 90 percent of the time. With a 24-hour forecast, this decreases to around 75 percent accuracy. In fact, this percentage accuracy will further decrease with longer-term forecasting.

Similarly, it is extremely challenging for FP&A teams to accurately forecast profit and loss and other financials. This is especially true with a longer forecast window and increased uncertainties in the environment.

One of the most recent drivers for uncertainty is inflation. While inflation has historically been relatively stable throughout the developed world and has been a simple assumption based on historical trends, today’s turbulent times require organizations to not only manage inflation, but plan for it as well.
