Step-by-Step

Getting your worksheet up and running on the Worksheet Server™ is easy. If you have worked with spreadsheets before, you can start to create a web application now.

  1. Create a worksheet
  2. Unprotect all input cells
  3. Setting all input cells to zero
  4. Uploading and starting the web application
  5. Editing the list of users
  6. Getting to work

Create a worksheet

Launch your favorite office application and create a new worksheet. Set up your row and column titles as required. Enter values and formulas and do all the fancy formatting. You can also link one sheet in your workbook with cells in another sheet in the workbook (in the example below we retrieve some values from a sheet called 'Net Sales').

Unprotect all input cells

There is one important thing that is usually neglected when building a spreadsheet. Be sure to unprotect (unlock) all cells that are required to accept input values, and be sure to protect (lock) all other cells. You can protect a cell by opening a special cell-format dialog box that might look like this.
ScreenshotIn the sample worksheet below, we marked all cells that are input cells and that have to be unprotected (unlocked). All other cells have to be protected (locked).

Setting all input cells to zero

As a final step, you should set all values in the input cells to zero (or set them as reasonable default values).

Uploading and starting the web application

Send the worksheet to the server. On the server, the worksheet will automatically be converted into a multi-user web application.

Within minutes, you get a secure SSL-Link to your application. All you need now is your favorite browser. No applets or ActiveX-Controls to download or install. No problems with the firewall. Just enter the link to your application and you will see the login screen. Enter the username 'admin' and the password that you received from us, and press 'Login'.

Editing the list of users

Select 'Options' / 'Users and Passwords' and begin to edit the list of users. Each user can be assigned a username and an initial password. Users can also be assigned to user groups. Later, you will assign read/write access privileges to each user group, allowing you to control which user may access which data.

Getting to work

You can now logout as admin and login as one of the users. Instantly, you and your team can begin to enter data and watch the web application do all calculations and consolidations.

Congratulations!

You have reached the end of the tutorial.
