Save Data Windows 7

In XP I used to be able to start and stop the service and save data using the Palo Server Manager on the task bar

In Windows 7 with it's "you can't do it" approach to security it seems that clicking on these options does nothing. (Presumably because the save /stop / start commands are not "run as administrator")

Is there a way to make these work, or another way to force a save of the cube data without exiting Excel?
Best wishes

RE: Save Data Windows 7

you could try the admin interface in your web browser (edit the palo.ini to enable this)

RE: Save Data Windows 7

Does Win7 have a services manager like XP? (Control Panel-> Administrative Tools-> Services)

Services displays all jobs running. You can start and stop the PSM there.

@Axi - I haven't had time to check out the admmin interface but that's probably an answer.

@jgibbs - How do I add PSM to the list of services - it's not there at the moment?

Hi Pommie,

If you're able to launch the "services" program I'm surprised it wouldn't be there. I know you're pretty handy with cubes and windows so I apologize for saying things that might be obvious (but here goes :) ). I don't have win7 so I'm just guessing.

You're working on the host machine right? Maybe it's a rights issue but then I wonder why would win7 let you see any services that are running?

The list is alphabetical so (obviously) look under P.

Can you access the data in Excel? And you have the Palo icon in the systray?

That's all I have. Sorry.

Ah - you are not talking about Palo MOLAP Server Service are you?

That doesn't have any save data option (apart from shut down which presumably saves data)

I was guessing that there was some sort of Palo Server Manager service you were referring to.....

Err, no.

I need to be more technical. You are correct. However, even in our Windows environment, with the "Palo Server Manager" running in the system tray, I've never noticed that the "Save Database" button does anything. I've always just clicked "stop" and "start" to force a save.

Of course, I don't even do that now thanks to the help I got setting up a script to do a back up overnight.

Sorry for the confusion!

7777 is the port your palo server listens to

this link is not the solution ;-)
but gives you an idea where the lever is

Thanks AXI

I have worked out how to save a datbase but it's not pretty is it. :D

Does anyone have any idea why the old way (clicking on the button in the task bar) no longer works?

user right management in Windows 7 - you are not admin but an ordinary user

one could check (programming task for the app developer!) wether the tray app is running under Windows 7 and if ask the user if he wants to perform this function

analogue to installing new software under Windows 7

under Linux I also have to change my hat from user to paloadmin to do these tasks - Windows 7 comes along ;-)

Thanks - I have to admit tha I get terribly confused as to why Microsoft seem to distinguish between me having an account (the only one on the laptop) described as being an "admistrator" and the way they then treat the account as a non-admin account for anything that actually matters X(

Hi,

when is it necessary to force saving data?

So far I have done quite a bit of work with PALO - with XP up to now.

I hardly ever saved data manually - and I did not notice that I lost any data - nor any structural changes.

Is Palo not reliably auto-saving all information?

Hi,

data is written to RAM and log files upon insertion in the cube. When you save your server (manually or during shutdown), the log files are merged into the csv files. If you kill your task, the log files will be merged into the csv files during the next startup.
Automatic saving can be set in the palo.ini, but it looks like there are problems with this function. You can find more infos on this in the Palo manual.

Can you guys please explain this manual save in "dummy's" english

I have tried to access the

http://127.0.0.1:7777/browser

I get this message
ACCESS DENIED
Please use the administration interface to access the server browser

1. Does this mean that I have to login as "administrator" for this to work?

2. By Stopping a Service and Restarting, am I effectively forcing a save on the database?
I can live with that if it is the easiest solution possible as I will just do a restart overnight.

Thanks heaps,

Xpresson

Yes Xpression,
forcing a restart will perform an actual save,

stop, start, save in win 7

Hi John,

Did you discover why the Stop, Start and Save functions in Palo Server Manager no longer work in Win 7. I am logged in to Win 7 as Administrator.

Hi,

to open the admin interface via web, you have to put something like this in your palo.ini

Source code

1
admin "127.0.0.1" 7778

Hi Dominik

In latest 3.1, I'm still not able to stop and save via service manager, in Win 7 (64-bit). I now also find i cannot clear a cube of obselete data. Both fucntions worked fine in XP, as you know.

Is there any 'fix' we can make to Win 7 ... or an update for 3.1 due to address the problems?
