Locking & Floating

There was a thread a while back where someone asked about locking values when splashing (E.g. holding UK at 100K whilst distributing a new total for Western Europe amongst the other countries)

This doesn't get a mention in the 2.5 manual - can it be done?
Best wishes

This is the goal-seek algorithm. You can achieve this by entering values in a base cell with a leading "?". The consolidated value will be kept as it was, another base value will be adapted for this.

You may have to adapt the goal-seek parameters in the palo.ini (see palo.ini.sample for examples) that limit the slice size and the possible calculation time.

Thanks Dominik but we are not talking about quite the same thing I think.

In my (simplified) example I might have existing values

Dept 1 3,000

Category A 1,000
Category B 1,000
Category C 1,000

Category A also belong to "All Categories" in another hierarchy

I want to change Dept1 total but hold Category A, not enter a new value for Category A which your solution would seem to require.

Also goal seeking does not seem to work if an element has multiple parents as shown above. I get an error message if I try it in my example.

"Locking" and "floating" is pretty standard functionality in other planning tools that allow spreading and is a pre-requisite in the ITT I am dealing with just now. Even TM1 can do it :D

You're right, I misunderstood what you're trying to do.

Thanks Dominik

So am I correct in assuming that the locking functionality doesn't exist. If so are there any plans to introduce it?

Hello Pommie,

for sure you did not use MIS Alea for a while ;-) focusing too much on TM1.

I think that what you call "locking & Floating" inside TM1 might be called "ReAllocator" inside MIS Alea, available using the "?" sign (spreading/splashing amount on a consolidated indicator, but freezing some children inside the hierarchy).

Same as in Alea, Palo uses the question mark to handle your function... but right now it is buggy. The "lock" put the gap only on the eldest brother of each dimension (or the next one if you freeze the eldest). As for now I did not put a message on the Bug Tracking System because this function does not sound to be official. I think it is more important to focus on stable functions, helping Jedox people to improve documented functions.

Four years ago I asked Jedox developers for the undo function inside the spreader, and I am more than happy to get it. May be you're right : it is time to ask for "Locking & Floating" because a marvelous Ram-based Olap tool with write-back capabilities such as Palo deserves this function. So please send a word document explaining your will to the Jedox development team.
