XMLA support?

Hi,

I'm trying to figure if the community edition supports XMLA and how to access it.
I could install Palo, set up MDX support and I can use the Pivot tables in Excel. Now I want to go one step further and use a XMLA client like REX (http://sourceforge.net/projects/whex/) to explore the Palo database using XMLA.

How do I have to set up the XMLA string to make it work? My first approach was http://127.0.0.1:7777 but it doesn't work (HTTP error 503).
The next port I tried was 4242. After entering the user the Palo MDX service crashes.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Benjamin

Hi,

I'm trying to access Palo using pivottables and eventually other xmla clients too. I was able to explore the demo db using Pivot table (even if it's very slow), but could'nt figure how to use other xmla clients, pointing to 127.0.0.1:4242 results in the application hanging on.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

RQ

From the overwhelming feedback I get my question I conclude Palo isn't able to handle XMLA requests.

The community edition will only handle XMLA requests from Excel, i.e. it has built-in support for Excel Pivottables.

The Enterprise Edition of the BI Suite includes the Palo ODBO Provider, which will interpret XMLA / ODBO requests from any client.

RE: XMLA support?

Hi,

For SQL Server 2000 OLAP the XMLA connection string is:
http://localhost/xmla/msxisapi.dll

What is XMLA connection string for PALO Enterprise ?

Hi Dominik,

thanks for your answer. I might download the trial version the next days.

We are developing Wabit , an Open Source Reporting tool and I would like to test how it would work together with Palo.

Thanks,

Benjamin

Please note that since the ODBO / XMLA provider is not open source, there won't be support for it on the forum.

Benjamin,

You should change your location from Freiburg to Canada :-)

I have been looking at the various SQLPower offerings over the last few days, very impressed.

Thanks for the compliments :-) Our developers have been working hard to bring our reporting tool up to speed and also to implement the Mondrian Schema Designer. I'm not working as a developer, but I have written tons of enhancement requests, many of them made it into our current release.

I wish we could use the open source version of Palo as a data source but to use the Java API would take too much time so I was hoping they would offer an XMLA provider for it.

Wabit <> XMLA <> Palo

Hi Benjamin!

I played around with Wabit and my (enterprise) ODBO/XMLA Provider for Palo. It doesn't work. I get error from olap4j driver (which I can't copy/paste btw. - copy seams not to work in that dialog in wabit). I've attached screenshot.

Are you involved into development of olap4j? I would like to help you get this running.

I also gave whex a try and it looks like working.

Hi,

thanks for trying out Wabit. I'm personally not involved in the development of olap4j but one of our developers is. I'll send you his email in a private message.

Wabit <> XMLA <> Palo

Update:
I've downloaded and installed latest Wabit version (1.1.1). With it I was able to connect and "execute" couple of views against our provider.

Thanks for the update. I just talked with our developer and we could get the same queries to work as you did. It looks very promising. Luc will stay in contact with you.
