Automatic database/cube creation

Hi,
is it possible to create a database automatically by running a script?

My idea is, that the user just writes down his dimension hierachies in Excel. After that he pushes the button and Excel creates the database and cube with the corresponding dimensions by iteself.

I know how to build the hierachy autmatically if the cube already exists. I wonder how I create the database or the cube by script.

I tried imppalo, but did not find any solution.

Thanks a lot for your hints

RE: Automatic database/cube creation

Hi,

in Hugos OLAP/BI-Blog I found something interesting: a tool which brings an OLAP-Model described by a mindmap - nice idea - better than excel! - automatically to Palo:

OLAP Prototyping tool

I like the idea very much, but I don't know if it's just "vaporware" ... no download link!

On the other hand, I work with Talend Open Studio (TOS): I only have to name the DB, the cube and the dimensions ... all elements will be imported by TOS. This works fine ...

the best, Lars

RE: Automatic database/cube creation

Hi

The OLAP Mindmap tool isn't vaporware and a link will be included when the tool is ready. Unfortunatly a user on this forum (BMM - Bent) asked a question shortly after I announced the tool asking if the tool was capable of assigning an element to multiple parents. This is a valid use of palo and quite a common requirement.
When I tested for this scenerio I realised that this wasn't possible. I therefore want to fix this bug before I release the tool.
Although this may frustrate others it's the way I choose to work. Beside I work in finance, given the state of the financial markets over the past 18 months I'm sure you can imagine how busy I have been.

For the use who like to use Talend Open Studio (TOS) and spend time creating reports you may want to look at my lastest tool, you can read about it here and download a PDF at the same link which contains further information and tutorials. This code is availbale on the Talend Exchange.

RE: Automatic database/cube creation

I don't know what RAQ reports is. Wordpress includes links which it thinks are related so perhaps you clicked on one of those.

The report tool could put data from palo in a spreadsheet, so long as it can extract it in one form or another. The tool isn't really aimed at palo users, since palo already head a great interface into excel. I wish palo had more adhoc abilities and it was easier to slice and dice data within excel. Keep pasting views is a real PITA, from that point of view I prefer JPalo's eclipse client.

The link was because I'm sure there are probably numerous accountants and other users out there who want to create Excel reports with data from different source systems. Also I felt like I needed to justify not releasing the mindmap application. However I work full time and have a family, commitments and other interests.
